Few horses in history can be credited with completely changing a breed, but the fabled WING COMMANDER did just that. In the ring, shown by the great Earl Teater for the fabulous Dodge Stables, he rewrote the record books, claiming the title of World's Five-Gaited Grand Champion for six consecutive years (1948-1953), plus being the World's Champion Five-Gaited Stallion seven times (1947-1953). As a sire, he led the ratings for six consecutive years (1963-1968). Famed for his tremendous action and blistering speed, he passed these traits on to his sons and daughters, who won World titles and countless championships from coast to coast. As breeding stock, his get not only produce show ring stars, but continue to do so from one generation to the next. If you've seen a Saddlebred class in the last fifty years, you've seen a descendant of this remarkable individual. If you've owned members of the breed in that period of time, there's probably been Wing blood in them. People who know nothing of Saddlebreds have heard of this great icon of horsedom, as he's been featured as the breed standard in books and encyclopedias for many years. The artist, who saw "The Wing" as an older horse, carefully studied every available photo in his huge collection of Saddlebred books and magazines, plus referred to movie films, in the hopes of producing an honest portrait of the great champion. You can now be among the very few to own this tribute to greatness.

Mr. Walls is planning on producing, as a mate to this print, a portrait of the magnificent Genius Bourbon King, whose blood, when combined with that of Wing Commander, has produced an amazing array of champion show stars and great breeding stock. The artist also intends to create portraits and prints of other great show and breeding Saddlebreds and Hackneys, along with noted stars of other breeds, so be sure to watch for future works depicting the great ones.

The majestic ROXIE HIGHLAND was crowned world’s grand champion three-gaited Saddlebred in 1930, 1933, and 1934. This exquisite mare was sired by LORD HIGHLAND, a son of the great HIGHLAND DENMARK. Her dam was NANNIE McDONALD, a daughter of the super horse, REX McDONALD. Her unique beauty, style and action endeared her to the horse show public as few horses ever have. She rose to the height of her fame in the ownership of the fabled Spindletop Farm.

"Waiting in the wings" is a pencil study depicting a mare and her young foal sheltered in a secluded, shady area, as the other mothers and babies are out in the bright sun. As he watches two lively colts frolicking in the open field, the colt nervously fidgets, anxious to join in the fun. His dam, however, stomps her hind hoof and softly nickers, letting him know that he's not ready to join in with "the big kids" -- just yet. This drawing was done to show the classic bond between a mother and her young, as is seen in pastures across the world.
